Shrines

Jen September 11th, 2007

What is a shrine? In my mind, when an object moves beyond a theme and becomes more of an embodiment of the spirit of whatever is being enshrined. Guess, what I’m saying is, "Trust Me!" You have to see it to believe it!

Beeeee Shrine

Beeeee Shrine - Bees are ever present in my world in the country - our fields are a plethora of winged beasties including the apparent 500 species of bees that Nova Scotia has. Who knew?!? I know that 60% of all our food are pollenated by bees. SIXTY percent. Amazing! Created using a small wooden house-shaped box, copper sheeting, seed head, bambo skewer, dowel, ceramic insulator, rusted and copper wire, bee charm, acrylic paints, patina.

A shrine to the Biscuit Eater, my favourite cafe in Nova Scotia, located in Mahone Bay. Visit and you too will become a follower!

Comfort of Home Shrine

Comfort of Home - a shrine created for the 100 Artist Show at Zeek Gallery. Made of a wooden box, doll’s arms, patina’d metal, heart-shaped sea glass, red wool and the base off some cast-off folk art chicken.

Recycle Shrine

Zeek Gallery’s Artist Challenge to create a "Shrine to our Environment"… all artist’s were sent the same plain wooden box. Dimensions: 4.25 x 5 x 2.25" The interior is a gel transfer of a man with open arms to the horizon. The words "Speak to the Earth, And it shall teach thee." are inscribed on the bottom. The inside door has been gold-leafed and aged.
